Pellet Stove Pipe

If you are considering installing a pellet stove in your home then you will need to buy some pellet stove pipe. It is not that hard to install a pellet stove and there are a few great websites where you can buy pellet stove pipe and everything else you will need to install your new stove. I will outline below how you can easily install one of these great stoves.

Pellet stoves are great. They keep your house much warmer than oil heat and are much cheaper to run and are very environmentally friendly. Because the carbon that is burned is equal to the amount of CO2 that the tree used during its growth, you will be carbon neutral by burning pellets. This is a big step in the right direction to helping the environment. You will also help yourself get of the dependency for foreign oil and use a fuel that is grown locally.

Now before you think about installing your new stove you are going to need to buy some pellet stove pipe. This kind of pipe is different from normal wood stoves in that it comes in a different size. You will need 3 inch or 4 inch pipe as opposed to 6 or 8 inch pipe that is used in normal wood burning stoves. You will need a wall thimble some insulated pellet stove pipe and a rain cap for the outside.

There are two types of installation you can do. You can do a horizontal installation where you just run the pipe straight from the stove through the wall thimble outside the house. Or you can do a vertical install where you need to install a tee and go upwards usually 6 feet and then outside the house. You can also have the rise outside the house and horizontally exit the house.

I recommend a horizontal installation because it is cheaper and easier to do. You will only need a stove adapter, 4 feet of pellet stove pipe, a wall thimble with fresh air intake, and a rain cap. First you need to measure where you will cut the holes in your wall. For this I just measure how high the exhaust hole is on the back of the stove. I also measure how high the air intake is on the back of the stove. Then measure that height on the wall and cut out your holes with a jigsaw.

After you are done cutting your holes install the wall thimble and make sure everything is well sealed up and insulated. Then all you need to do is run your pellet stove pipe through the wall thimble along with your fresh air intake hose. Seal all the joints in the pellet stove pipe with 500 degree RTV. Install the rain cap and you are all done.
